bouldering/rock climbing - how dangerous?

by Steven
(California)

I've really wanted to get into climbing for a while, but just really haven't had the time until now. One of my concerns is that it seems pretty dangerous. Now I'm not one to not do something because it is a little dangerous, but at the same time, I won't want to be putting myself in jeopardy every time I climb. So, I suppose my question is this: In the reality of it all, with no bias towards the sport, how dangerous is rock climbing? Is bouldering less dangerous?

Thanks a ton, I look forward to hearing what you have to say,

Sincerely,
Steven

Answer: Hey Steven,

Great question and tell you the truth climbing is inherently dangerous. However, I will say this having the proper knowledge astronomically lowers your risk. You must take appropriate action to learn what you need to know to be safe.

Bouldering can be more dangerous in some aspects. You are typically lower to the ground but a lot of climbing injuries happen while bouldering.

My best advice is to take a climbing orientation course to get the basic safety and idea down and then move from there.
