Setting up a Top Rope Anchor

by Graham
(Kentucky)

What's the correct way to setup a top rope? When you get to the top, and your setting it up for the next climber, I know your supposed to have redundancy, so do you use quickdraws and run the rope through or webbing or what?

Graham great question.

When you are climbing outside there are a few things you want to make sure of.

Redundancy is key. I suggest if there are anchors for the route that you use quickdraws. You'll use two quickdraws that are opposite opposing, which means that the gates on bottom biners are facing the opposite direction.

You could use webbing and locking biners, but quickdraws are the simplest way.

Also, be sure not to just run the rope through the anchors this puts unneeded use on the actual anchors.
