Sonnie Trotter - A Look into this Professional Climber's Life

Sonnie Trotter began climbing when he was 16 years old. He got his start by climbing an artificial wall at an outdoor festival in Toronto. Like most of us truly addicted climbers he felt the high and has been chasing it ever since.

When Sonnie graduated, he hit the open road for the rocky mountains of Colorado. Since that trip Sonnie Trotter says “that I don't think I’ve been home for more than three or four months ever since. Although I love and miss my family greatly, I will never regret leaving behind the urban sprawl to explore a world of uncertainty, a world of great character, raw beauty and individual expression.”

sonnie totter, monkey face, smith rock On Sonnie’s website he says that “one thing I have come to realize through climbing and exploring is that fear is an illusion. No matter were we go, there will always be good people around a warm fire, there will always be a friend to share with a cold beer and there will always be a new adventure lurking somewhere over them there hills. So enjoy!”

His Philosophy

I think we can all learn from Sonnie’s philosphy so here it is. Do what you love. Love what you do. Take less. Give more. Never quit. Never follow. Be passionate. Be bold. Be honest. Respect people. Respect the environment. Always bring out the best in your family and friends. Change is the only constant. Fear is an illusion. Attitude is everything.

In Action on the Rock

I would say that he is most famous for his ascent of the Cobra Crack. In June, 2006, Squamish, B.C. Patagonia climbing ambassador Sonnie Trotter climbed the first free ascent of Cobra Crack (5.14).

Sonnie worked the overhanging, thin-finger crack 30--40 times over the past few years, often rope-soloing the route to dial the moves, before completing it all-free. Sonnie said, "It's very rare to find a climb that is both overhanging, and so aesthetic. The fingers fit inside, but barely -- if the crack was any more shallow, it would be just another impossible wall, if the crack was much steeper, it may be impossible -- so I consider that route a gift for climbers.

I've spent the better half of 10 years looking for a climb like that. It's perfect." Enjoy the video!

Sonnie has pushed the limits Sport Climbing with a First Ascent of Forever Expired Lions Head 5.14d, Crack FA of Cobra Crack 5.14, he has bouldered V12, not too mention his notable competition finishes, deep water soloing, and big wall accomplishmetns.

This next video is of Sonnie Trotter on The Path a sweet 5.14 trad line. He said this is the next step in hard trad climbing.
