Using weights to increase climbing performance

by Ken Applegate
(Fort William, UK)

Hi,

I have the slight problem that the nearest wall to me is a far way, and I can only justify a trip once or twice a fortnight. I am very keen to use the gym (weights etc.) to help my climbing, but I worried about bulking out too much.

Could you recommend some exercises with free weights, fixed weights and cardio equipment that will help my strength and stamina specific to climbing?

Kind Regards,

Ken Applegate

Answer:

Ken first thing I recommend is you pick up a hangboard/fingerboard for your house. That way you can utilize it when you can't go to the gym. Also, here are some exercises I recommend for you:
pull-ups, dips, pushups, hammer curls, shoulder raises and presses, lots of core exercises and even pilates will help a lot.

Something that is helping me a lot right now is doing kettlebell exercises.
