Velcro vs. Lace-Ups

by Jen
(Peabody, MA)

I'm a beginning climber who is looking to buy my first pair of climbing shoes, to be used for indoor bouldering and climbing. That being said, would there be any advantage to getting velcro versus lace-up shoes, or vice versa?

Answer

Velcro shoes are great for the gym because it will be easy for you to take off in between your climbs, which is what you want to do. They will give you a little less support for your feet but shouldn't be that big of a deal.

Lace up shoes will give you more support and can be more comfortable for a beginner climber. The advantages of lace up is really comfort and support. I would try both types on and find which feels better to you. If you do get the lace ups just be sure to take them off every now and then while you rest.

Hope that helps
