Climbing Gyms

What are you supposed to wear when climbing?

by Paul
(Oregon)

I am brand new to climbing and wondering what I should wear when I go to the Rock Gym? Is it ok to wear jewelry? Should I wear pants, shorts, tennis shoes?

Paul

Thanks for the question Paul. For your first time climbing I would recommend that you wear some loose fitting and comfortable clothes. Whether you wear shorts or pants is up to you, but take into consideration the temperature and your comfort. If your gym doesn’t have Air Conditioning I would definitely wear shorts (a pair of workout shorts will work just fine).

As far as shoes I would recommend that you rent a pair from your climbing gym if at all possible. Most gyms will rent shoes for a few dollars and trust me it is really worth it. Tennis shoes will work but the climbing shoes will definitely make it easier for you.

I don’t wear any jewelry while I climb, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t. I would say though that you should take off all rings, watches, and long necklaces(or put the necklace under your shirt). The main thing about jewelry is you want to make sure that it won't get stuck on anything while you are climbing.

If you become a regular at your local climbing gym you will definitely want to invest in a few things.

First you will probably want to get a pair of climbing shoes. Check out our guide to finding the right climbing shoes for you here.

You will want to find a pair of shorts that are extremely comfortable, breathable, and quick drying. My favorite shorts are the

Lastly you want to get yourself some moisture wicking tshirts. These aren’t essential but can be pretty nice. REI.com
has a great selection.
